Simon Stephens' Punk Rock explores the psyche of a group of contemporary British students as they navigate through preparatory school with a plethora of teen angst issues.  The director had the vision of using expressive movement pieces as transitions between the seven scenes. Six of the seven scenes take place in the library commons. As the set designer, I came up with a concept that caters to all of these ideas.  All of the movement sequences take place inside of the very disturbed imagination of a character. Because of this, my first instinct was to do away with a literal and proper library set.  The book shelves and cases in the set are in abstract shapes and seemingly falling apart, just like the minds of the characters. The are six entrance areas, multiple levels, and versatile open space providing many possibilities for dynamic staging. With a very limited budget, resources, and time for an all student-run production, this design was the perfect solution.
